Expedition’s Dirty Transmission Fluid Creates Gas Pedal Vibration

Apr. 01 2025

Vehicle: 2016 Ford Expedition, 4WD, V6-3.5L Turbo, Automatic Transmission/Transaxle

Mileage: 126,004 miles

Problem: The owner stated that when he drove the vehicle at 35 mph or above, he noticed a weird vibration or shudder in the gas pedal. The higher the speed, the worse it got. Sometimes he could also feel the vibration in the engine compartment area.

Case Details: After confirming the vibration on a test drive, the technician put a call into ALLDATA Tech-Assist for some diagnostic ideas. The Tech-Assist consultant suggested reprogramming the transfer case control module (TCCM), inspecting for a loss of vacuum to the integrated wheel end (IWE) actuators and checking for wear of the IWE components. Problems with any of these could cause a vibration. The consultant said that occasionally he had seen dirty automatic transmission fluid and filters cause a vibration problem. He suggested performing a full service on the transmission.

Confirmed Repair: Since the vehicle had over 100K miles, the technician decided to replace the automatic transmission fluid and filter first using OEM-recommended parts and fluid. After the transmission was serviced, the vibration magically disappeared. Easy fix to a weird problem!
