TECH-ASSIST QUICK TIP
Ford E350 Van Has Intermittent No Start – No DTCs

Vehicle: 2013 Ford E350, V8-5.4L., Automatic Transmission/Transaxle

Mileage: 145,490

Problem: The van was towed to the shop for an intermittent crank, no start problem.

Case Details: The technician noticed that when the engine did not start, fuel pressure was zero. There were no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). He installed a new fuel pump, module and relay. That did not solve the problem, so a call went out to an ALLDATA Tech-Assist consultant.

The consultant said that he had seen this problem with these vans before and suggested checking for high resistance in the main ground strap that attaches to the frame. As an alternative, he suggested running a temporary ground wire from the negative battery terminal to the frame just to see if that resolved the problem. NOTE: On these vehicles, the fuel pump and module use the frame as a ground. High resistance in the ground strap will often cause the problem with the fuel pump, but not necessarily for other components.

Confirmed Repair: The technician found the ground strap to the frame corroded and it had extremely high resistance. He replaced the factory ground strap and installed an extra ground strap from the frame to the negative battery terminal connector. He also cleaned and tightened the negative battery cable ends where they attach to the engine and the battery. Fixed!
