TECH-ASSIST QUICK TIP
GMC Sierra Lost Communication with Several Modules

Nov. 01 2024

Vehicle: 2014 GMC Sierra, 1500, 2WD, V8-5.3L, Automatic Transmission/Transaxle

Mileage: 96,335

Problem: The owner brought the Sierra in because the power steering stopped working.

Case Details: After connecting a scan tool, the technician noted that there was no communication with the ABS control module, power steering control module or the steering angle sensor.

The technician measured 120 ohms across DLC connector pins 6 and 14. He also noticed that he did not have communication from the body control module (BCM) to the power steering control module. Data was good coming from the BCM connector X6, pins 24 and 25.

Looking for all connectors related to the affected modules in the wiring diagrams, the technician noticed that the power for the steering angle sensor came from connector X185. NOTE: It’s a chassis harness to body harness connector located near the under-hood fuse block. When he checked that connector, he found some corroded pins.

Confirmed Repair: He cleaned the pins and checked for correct pin fitment and tension. After that, communication with all modules was restored. Problem solved!
