Volvo XC70 Lacks Throttle Response Because of Bad Differential Module
Apr. 01 2025
Apr. 01 2025

Vehicle: 2013 Volvo XC70 T6, AWD, L6-3.0L Turbo, VIN 90 B6304T4, Automatic Transmission/Transaxle

Mileage: 196,202 miles

Problem: The customer stated that the engine would not respond to throttle input. It would idle but not accelerate.

Case Details: After connecting a scan tool, the technician ran a full module scan and found no communication on the high-speed CAN bus. It seemed odd that there were no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), but that can happen with can bus communication problems.

Wanting to diagnose this problem as quickly as possible, the technician put a call in to ALLDATA Tech-Assist for some guidance. The consultant advised that since there were several modules that communicate on the high-speed CAN bus, he should start disconnecting each module one at a time until communication came back.

Based on his prior experience with Volvo CAN bus issues, the consultant advised disconnecting the power steering module and the differential electronic module (DEM) first. The location of all the modules on the high-speed CAN bus could be found in ALLDATA Repair.

The technician inspected the two modules as suggested and found that communication came back when the DEM was disconnected.

Confirmed Repair: The technician replaced the DEM, and communication was restored on the high-speed CAN bus. A good test drive confirmed that the issue was resolved. Fixed!
